Bayview Yacht Club, host of
the famous Port Huron to Mackinac Yacht Race, announced that Michigan
Secretary of State Candice Miller has accepted the position of Honorary
Chairperson for the 2002 event.
Greg Thomas, chairman of the
2002 race, said the choice of Secretary Miller was a natural one.
"Secretary Miller comes from a great racing family and has earned the
title of 'Old Goat,' meaning she has competed in more than 25 Mackinac
races. The consummate Mackinac Race veteran, she somehow always finds room
in her busy schedule to return to her roots and participate in the
race.
Her affection for both our
State and our sport make her the perfect selection as Honorary Chairperson
of the 78th Bacardi Bayview Mackinac Race." The historic race is
considered a tradition across Michigan and throughout the sailing world,
drawing sailors from as far away as Europe. Many sailors begin
participating in the event as youngsters and continue into their senior
years.
"Since I was old enough
to sail, this event has been the highlight of my summer," said
Secretary Miller. "Each year I look forward to the sportsmanship and
camaraderie, as well as the challenge of competing against some of the
finest sailors in the world." The 78th Bacardi Bayview Mackinac Race
will be held Saturday, July 13, 2002.
Approximately 280 yachts
from across the United States, Canada and Europe will race from Port
Huron, Michigan north on Lake Huron to Mackinac Island. "As Michigan
Secretary of State, it is a thrill and a privilege to serve as the
honorary chairperson for the 78th edition of this historic regatta,"
said Secretary Miller. "It is simply the greatest freshwater sailing
competition in the world."
