Sailors Monitor Weather Conditions As They
Prepare For A Safe Race During The Port Huron to Mackinac Race
Thursday, July 19, 2001
As sailors prepare for the Saturday start of
the 77th Bayview Mackinac Race, they will be focused on the weather and
monitoring appropriate marine band weather channels,
weather Web sites, television and radio
stations for weather forecasts.
All Port Huron to Mackinac Race skippers will attend the final weather briefing
in Port Huron on Saturday morning at 8 AM EDT at the St. Clair Community College
in Port Huron. The the meeting, they will be provided detailed weather
reports prepared by Professor Peter Sousounis, University of Michigan's
Atmospheric Sciences department.
The concern for the weather and the potential problems it can cause is all part
of a safety first attitude for the fleet.
During the race, sailors are required as part of their sailing instructions and
participation rules to call the Coast Guard and report their positions on the
grid at precise report times and at their roundings.
