This Year's Port Huron to Mackinac Race Turns Michigan's Secretary of State In To An
"Old Goat"

Being called an old goat doesn't seem like a pleasant and respectful term that someone would want to be called.  However, this year that is exactly what many people may be calling Michigan's Secretary of State, Candice Miller.  For Miller and others familiar with the Bayview Yacht Club Port Huron to Mackinac race, it is a very prestigious honor.  In Bayview country "old goat" refers to a skipper or sailor who has sailed in 25 or more Port Huron to Mackinac Island races.

With a long range sailing event such as the Port Huron Mac, the experience that goes along with this term is one of the best assets for a captain to have on their side.

The "old goat" is a distinction held very dear by those which it has been bestowed upon.  The harsh winds and ever changing waters make the course difficult to navigate.  Experience gained by participating in so many races is unparalleled by any other event or lesson learned in a controlled environment.  The organizers of the race require that 3/4 of the crew be experienced in sailing and racing.  This is actually a safety requirement since bad weather and emergency situations may arise at any time.

The experience that these skippers offer is not the only positive contributed.  The history of the race and the tradition are carried on and presented to generations of sailors and spectators.  It was once said that the only way we know where we are going is to know where we have been.  The "old goats" know where the race has been and the direction it will take in the future.  It is through them that the greatness of this event is truly seen.  They can tell of the 50-mile per hour wind in 1945, the year only four of 50 boats finished.  The glory of winning the race twice in seven years is a story that an old goat can tell with pride and experience.  Their participation and drive is what has helped make this race such a reputable and distinguished annual event.

So next time you head in to your local Secretary of State's office to renew your drivers license, think about the "old goat" who is running the place.  This will be Miller's  25th Bayview Mackinac Yacht Race.
